The signature "K. & K. KUNSTGEWERBESCHULE Wien, SP. L., 1917" as well as the exceptional size of the ceramic figure allow us to come to the conclusion that it is Luise Spannring’s graduation piece completed for the master class at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule [School of Arts and Crafts].
Extracts from the records of Michael Powolny’s master classes held by the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (today’s Vienna University of Applied Arts): Michael Powolny describes Luise Spannring as "a steady student with stamina, praiseworthy; [she] worked on both vessels and figurative ceramic pieces with great independence and a great deal of sensitivity for the material" (13 June 1917).
