Bernatzik first had to devote himself to jurisprudence against his will, but soon went over to painting and attended the special school for landscape painting of Prof. E. Lichtenfels at the Vienna Academy for two years. In 1875 he was awarded the Golden Fügermedaille and in the same year he exhibited a large painting "Storm on the Coast of Abbazia" in the Künstlerhaus. There he preferred to paint forest and marsh landscapes, for which he used his nature studies made in Lundenburg (Lower Austria), and after a 3-year stay he went to Léon Bonnat in ParisAfter a short stay in Vienna he moved to Paris.
