Many wealthy Austrian master cabinetmakers sent their children and successors to arts and crafts schools. Even before 1900, the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, founded by Rudolf Eitlberger in 1864, was the best of these educational institutions. Among the many important artists and architects who taught there were Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Alfred Roller and Michael Powolny. With pride, it may therefore be said that the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts was the birthplace of Viennese Modernism. Groundbreaking, even beyond Bauhaus, artists from this school have, together with the numerous Wagner students, left their mark on the whole of Europe to this very day.
